Cool-X has been extensively tested.

Cool-X has been road tested for over 1 million miles in heavy duty trucks, and in hundreds if not thousands of cars. It has also been tested by tribology labs, engine builders, and OEM manufacturers of gearboxes and transmissions. You can understand that much of this testing was done under confidentiality agreements, so there are limits on what we can disclose in detail.

Cool-X Reduces ATF Temp 15°-29°F in JLTV Differential Dyno Testing


Cool-X was tested in ATF in a  differential for the General Dynamics prototype JLTV (HUMVEE replacement vehicle) by a major  gearbox manufacturer and military subcontractor to General Dynamics. In 64 hours of testing under heavy load, gearbox ATF temperatures were reduced 15°F in synthetic oil, and 29°F in mineral oil by adding Cool-X.


The military is developing a replacement vehicle (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle) for the HUMVEE to go into service in 2015. This vehicle is meant to be lighter, faster, and more fuel efficient, yet with improved blast resistance and survivability against IEDs. Program managers were interested in Cool-X, as temperature reductions in ATF promised longer maintenance intervals between oil changes, and longer MTBF and MTBR (mean time between repairs), which would be extremely valuable in remote combat areas and to avoid mechanical problems from compromising the mission.

Test Procedure:  

A large electric motor was used to spin a very large truck tire through the prototype differential with a load of 88 hp. Oil temperatures were monitored throughout the test. Two milspec oils (a Royal Purple synthetic ATF and a Lucas mineral oil based ATF) were evaluated 4 times each, for four hour intervals, followed by the addition of Cool-X to each oil, and the test repeated. In total 64 hours of testing was completed, 16 hours with and without Cool-X for each oil. Slight differences in ambient temperature were controlled for during the testing. 


All the gearboxes reached an equilibrium temperature before the end of the 4 hour cycle. The Lucas ATF had a final temperature of 157°F; with Cool-X added the final temperature dropped to 128°F, for a delta T of 29°F. The Royal Purple synthetic ATF went from 143°F to 128°F when Cool-X was added, a delta T of 15°F.

For the US military, a 29°F temperature reduction could mean a quadrupling in oil life, and the heat reduction could create a substantial increase in the mean time between gearbox failure measures. In missions where operating performance is critical and lives are on the line, particularly in desert or tropical environments, avoiding breakdowns due to excessive temperatures is crucial for success.”
